Variations on the Beast is the stuff of epic: pre-war Austria and Hungary, the Vienna Conservatory, World War II Germany, and a post-war denazification trial. The protagonist, Hermann Kapp-Dortmunder, is a musical prodigy who becomes a world-renowned conductor, endowed with dazzling charisma and musical authority that mask a hollow core.
The semiautobiographical Wild About Harry also takes World War II as a theme, but from a completely different perspective. In 1938, Harry Glass is a precocious Jewish boy born and raised in London, whose misadventures make him the despair of his immigrant parents. As World War II starts, he is evacuated to Wales and welcomed into a farm family, only to return home in time for the Blitz. Even in this context, boyhood is by turns funny, puzzling, and poignant.
